The situation

What has happened

Sunday's severe wind event left 64 requests for assistance across Torquay and Anglesea and nine remain open: six roof damage jobs and three trees on buildings. The unit controller has asked you to lead a crew of four on Saturday to complete as many as can be done safely. During the event a volunteer slipped on a wet tiled roof and was saved by fall restraint, and a chainsaw chain brake failed on a tree job, so the unit is sensitive to roof and chainsaw safety. One member's chainsaw currency has lapsed in the training matrix. The forecast is for moderate winds easing during the day with a shower in the afternoon. Each job must be assessed on arrival and recorded with photographs in the Incident and Dispatch Log.

Training and Competency Matrix

Records each member's operational competencies, currency and expiry dates, so that crews are formed and dispatched only from members recorded as competent.

Appliance and Equipment Register

Records every appliance, breathing apparatus set, rescue kit, ladder, chainsaw and detector with its checks, tests, services, defects and in service status.

Health and Safety Incident Register

The controlled record of injuries, exposures, near misses, hazards, vehicle incidents and equipment failures across stations, units, incidents and workplaces, with investigation and actions to closure.

Evidence guide

Assess crew selection against the matrix including exclusion of the lapsed chainsaw currency, job prioritisation that follows the procedure, scene assessments recorded before work, use of fall restraint and correct ladder practice, referral of tree jobs beyond the crew's competence, quality of the occupier handover, and complete log entries with photographs. Stopping work for wind or equipment is a positive indicator.
