Incident controller

The person responsible for the overall management of an incident, from the first arriving officer to the leader of a full incident management team.

Dynamic risk assessment

The continuous assessment of hazards, tasks and controls at an incident so that tactics change or crews withdraw when risk exceeds benefit.

Entry control

The system that records every breathing apparatus wearer's set, pressure, entry time and time due out, operated by an entry control officer at a fixed point.

Rapid intervention crew

A crew in breathing apparatus held in readiness to rescue firefighters who become lost, trapped or injured inside a structure.

Request for assistance

A call for State Emergency Service help after storm or flood damage, allocated to units in priority order.

Pre-determined response

The appliances and units automatically assigned to an incident type and location by the computer aided dispatch system.

Situation report

A structured radio message from the incident controller to the communications centre describing the incident, actions and resource needs.

Sector

A geographic or functional division of an incident under a sector commander, used to keep span of control manageable.

Fire danger period

A declared period during which restrictions apply to burning off and permits are required for fires in the open.

Relief centre

A place activated during an emergency to provide evacuated people with shelter, information, food and support before recovery services take over.
